Mutual funds still more interested in bonds
Even though some financial stress index is signaling risk taking for the first time, it does not look like everyone is on board. Have a look at page 1B of the USA Today, “Stock Rally Barely Tempts Fund Investors”. The USA Today notes that fund investors have been far more interested in bonds than stocks in July, which is surprising given the 10% run-up in the Dow over the month. Total purchases for bond funds from July 1 through July 22 hit $28.8 billion, compared to $4.1 billion for stock funds.

Inflation
Laid-off workers unable to find jobs that match old salaries
Have a look at the front page of today’s New York Times, “Years After Layoffs, Many Still Struggle to Match Old Salaries”. A new study out of Columbia University looks at workers who had been with a company at least three years and then lost their jobs when their employer cut the work force by at least 30%. The study found that even 15-20 years later, most had not returned to old wage levels.

Frugality
No need to go to the grocery store to buy eggs

Turn to page B1 of today’s New York Times, “Keeping Their Eggs in Their Backyard Nests”. Have a look at the opening passage: “As Americans struggle through a dismal recession, many are trying to safe-guard themselves from what they fear will even worse times ahead. They eat out less often. They take vacations closer to home. They put off buying new cars. And some raise chickens. Lloyd Romriell, a married father of four in Annis, Idaho, recently received seven grown chickens and a coop from a relative. The hens lay a total of about two dozen eggs a week”.
